Ok, so “Getting a Dog” was no where on Jim’s five year plan. It’s also probably not listed anywhere in the Beginners Guide to Permaculture, or Backyard Edible Gardens 101. But lets be honest, how could you resist this face?!

This is called Splooting, and it makes my day every time I see it!

Beside the obvious adorableness, permaculture is a lifestyle about well-rounded happiness, so although not a productive part of the farm, an animal that exudes limitless happiness is most definitely adding to the lifestyle.

The American Kennel Club describes the Pembroke Welsh Corgi as:

“(V)ery smart, sensitive dogs who respond well to training and mental challenges. As herding dogs bred to move cattle from one place to another, they are fearless, independent workers. A Pembroke without a job will often assign himself work, like herding children or his fellow dogs. They make excellent watchdogs, with acute senses and a “big dog” bark. Families who can meet the Pembroke’s need for activity and togetherness will never have a more loyal, loving pet.”

I also read somewhere that the Corgi is considered “a well rounded farm dog.”

So there we go! A pint sized farm dog, for our pint sized farm. I don’t think Ziggy will be doing any cattle round-ups anytime soon but if the chickens get out maybe he’ll help?

I have always wanted a corgi, and had been posting on Corgi club websites saying I was interested in adopting a male 2-7 year old Pembroke Welsh Corgi. Ziggy’s previous family bought him as a puppy but after 2 years realized they didn’t have the space for him because they live in a condo. They found my post, contacted me and asked if I was interested in him. Of course I said yes and in three days they delivered him to us!

A couple weeks after we had him we attended the Central Mass. Corgi Club Meet-Up, here’s Ziggy cheesing hardcore during the group photo.

We’ve had him for about a month now, and he has settled in quite nicely. He enjoys running around the yard, staring at the chickens and trying to catch the water from the sprayer while we water the plants. He was a bit overweight when we got him and has since lost 6 pounds!

He’s got a little more shape to him now, he used to be sausage shaped.

I love walks and being outside and apart from the gardening, its fun to have another living being to have fun with outside as well (although they’re cute the chickens don’t really count).

That’s that! We just wanted to introduce him since he will probably be in several pictures inadvertently.
